01

What is heat sealability?

Heat sealability is the property of a plastic film to form a tight and durable seal seam under the influence of heat and pressure. During the sealing process, two film layers are melted at the contact surfaces and bonded together under pressure. After cooling, a strong bond is created, which can be designed to be peelable or tear-resistant depending on the requirement.

02

Areas of application

Heat-sealable films are used in almost all areas of industrial packaging. Typical applications include sealed liners and bags for pharmaceutical, chemical and food products, sachet packaging, sterile barriers in medical technology, and sealed liners in drums and containers. The seal seam often represents the critical weak point of the packaging and must therefore be validated accordingly.

03

Test & Parameters

Seal quality is determined by three main parameters: sealing temperature, sealing pressure and sealing time. Standardised methods are used to test seal seam strength, including the tensile test according to DIN 55529 and the burst pressure test. A seal seam curve (Seal Curve) provides information about the optimum parameter window. The minimum sealing temperature (SIT – Seal Initiation Temperature) is an important material property.
