01
Definition & distinction from SUT
In process and filling technology, a distinction is made between Single-Use technology (SUT) and Multi-Use technology (MUT). SUT are technologies that are disposed of after a single use, such as containment packaging materials. MUT, on the other hand, are technologies that are used multiple times by undergoing an elaborate cleaning process, such as stainless steel containers.
02
Environmental impact
Despite their single use and the widespread image of plastic as being harmful to the environment, film-based containment solutions are significantly more environmentally friendly than stainless steel containers in a range of areas, as a life-cycle study of the two technologies shows.
03
Cost analysis
MUT causes significant ongoing costs due to CIP processes (cleaning time, water, energy, chemicals), maintenance and qualification effort. SUT such as Rhein-Plast-Liner eliminates these follow-on costs and enables faster product changeovers – a decisive advantage, especially for CDMOs with frequently changing products.
